P.ROD’S TOP TEN

top_10_header

In this month’s Top Ten P.Rod breaks down his top ten favorite graphics from his various pro models released since turning pro in 2002.

10. CITY STARS – GRILL (2002) This board never came out and the graphic was of my first car, a Benz I had. It was a pretty simple design that had my name on the grill. That would have come out in 2002 but, I left City Stars before it hit the shops. It never went into production and they had a little run of them made for a trade show. I specifically remember that I knew I wanted to quit and I felt like I could at least show enough respect and tell them before they spent all that money to print up my boards. I didn’t want to leave them with a inventory of boards they couldn’t sell so I made sure to quit well before they went into production.

9. PLAN B TATTOO COLOR FLASH (2010) -  I really like this one because of the old school style tattoo look to it, very traditional art. It’s a throw back to all of the old flash art you see in tattoo shops. It’s out now and it looks pretty sick. This one is ill…

8. PLAN B – BRUCE LEE “FURY” (2010) -  This one was another board that I gave Plan B the idea for. The Bruce Lee Eyes. Needless to say, Bruce Lee is my number one influence other then Jesus Christ. They drew this one up and showed it to me. I liked how they had zoomed in on his eyes. You can see the intensity in his eyes and you can tell it is Bruce Lee. The eyes are detailed but, it also shows the three scrapes he had on his face from “Enter The Dragon”. I love this one.

7. PLAN B – ALEXANDER THE GREAT (2010) - I have a big interest in Alexander The Great. I have a necklace that has a coin designed from his time, and I told Plan B I wanted a graphic with the same emblem from the coin. This one was really special because it’s a person I studied and I really admire. Alexander the Great inspires me and I wanted to represent that inspiration on one of my boards.

6. PLAN B – MUHAMMAD ALI (2009) – This graphic was my idea and I had sent Plan B pictures of Muhammad Ali that I researched. I’m inspired by certain people that I look up to and “The Greatest” has always been a hero of mine. When we designed this board, I had given them a few images but told them this was the one I preferred. That’s one of his most iconic photos of Muhammad Ali with him standing over Sonny Liston after their second fight. I was really into the design and my direction for this one.

5. PLAN B – PLAN B CALAVERA 2 (2010) – This one was the yellow stained board with the skull and praying hands. It was pretty much like the second version of the original Calavera board. Apparently this one did pretty well because I remember at the time I was told it was flying off the rack. I loved this graphic and it was always, always, always out of stock. When I did finally get my hands on some I was psyched. The graphic was inspired by the classic Powell Peralta Ray Rodriguez board (click to view).

4. PLAN B – CALAVERA 1 (2005) – My first graphic for Plan B was probably one of my most memorable boards. It was the Calavera, the Mexican skull. The original one they did for me was mainly black, red, and green, the traditional colors of Mexico. It’s hard to recall exactly although, I do have one stored at my house somewhere. I don’t remember who did that graphic for me, I’d actually like to know.

3. GIRL – FLOW SERIES (2004) – Girl Skateboards did this one for me and I can’t remember if it was between my first one and the G Wagon board. This board had a cool natural wood stain color but, it also had what looked like stickers all over it for the graphic. All the “stickers” had a bunch of cool little references to things I was into at the time.

2. PLAN B x NIKE SB – LOWRIDER (2009) – This was a collaboration board of mine with Plan B and Nike SB. This board is special to me because it goes with the “Today Was A Good Day” Nike SB commercial I did featuring Eric Koston, Ice Cube, and Kobe Bryant. This was by far my favorite piece of work I have ever been a part of. We used the low rider that Ice Cube drove for the board graphic. I remember we filmed for that commercial for 3 days.

1. GIRL – FIRST PRO MODEL (2002) – My first ever Pro board that I had was on Girl Skateboards. It was just a basic Girl logo but, they did it how everyone’s first board were back when they started Girl in 93. My board just a plain Girl logo but, it was in Spanish so it instead of saying Girl it said “Muchachita” with my name as well in English. That was my first pro board and to have it on a company like Girl was awesome. It was mostly the original Girl team, there wasn’t really a lot of new guys on yet. They did that board like a throw back to the first run of Girl decks like the OG Girl Team had. That was 2002, so going on 11 years ago. So long ago.

BONUS: If you could have anything as a graphic without the worry of copyrights etc. what would it be?

This is just because it’s the first thing that popped into my head.. maybe I could think up some other cool stuff but I’d like to get that photo of Tupac standing on the wall with his shirt off and he’s got the Thug Life tattoo and the glock in his waist band and a blunt in his hand. That would be sick.
